Shhh, did you hear something??

Hello there, yes it’s been a while. It’s just that I’ve been so dark and depressed lately I haven’t wanted to write much. Not much change in the usability of my hand which is contributing to my crrankiness too. But our latest trip to the Masai Mara warrants documenting. I know what I am about to say borders on blasphemy but now that we’ve been to the Mara at least six or seven times in the last three years it is starting to become boring to me. Well, not quite ‘boring’ but I am growing weary of safaris, the novelty has worn off. I mean how many times can you pull up along side of some lions and watch them sleep for fifteen minutes and then move on to the next animal standing around? Because that is what they do, sleep, chew grass, walk around, etc…..

The only difference this time was we camped. Yes, we brought our own tents and stuff, rented a campsite and camped in the Mara…with the animals…no electric fence, nothing. We did hire an armed Masai to guard the camp and keep the fire burning all night.

I really didn’t care to go but Kayla insisted. And the kids really wanted to go. There were two other families going with kids the same age I figured if I didn’t go and something happened and I wasn’t there to at least try to help that I would never be able to live with myself. So I went, Max and I didn’t sleep in the tent, we slept in the car. This way if Kayla had to make a mad dash out of the tent she would only have to worry about one kid instead of two. Now I ask you, does it sound ‘fun’ to camp out in a place where during the night you might get stepped on by a two ton hippo, or run over by a stampeding Elephant in musk or mistaken for Chinese takeout by a Hyena?

Here's the camp site. Notice our friend Wenzel's Land Rover has a tent on top of his car. I was jealous.

Howdee neighbor! The camp site was on the banks of the Mara River jiust where a family of SUV sized Hippos live.

Every fifteen minute....

I must admit that we were very lucky and came apon two Wildebeast crossings this time. One was by luck. And as we watched that one was saw a 15 foot Chroc sneak up on the line of Wildebeasts and snag one.

The other one we waited for. And these are the photos from that crossing. This herd was two or three hundred strong. And included Zebras. Nobody was eaten on this crossing
